A broad cross-sector, cross-ideology coalition of leaders from across the state are calling for a Working Parents Tax Cut. Join them.
1.7 million Michigan households don’t earn enough to pay for basic necessities. This problem is magnified for households with young children, who must also face the high cost of childcare.
The best way to help these households at scale is through a Working Parents Tax Credit. Our proposal would create a large, fully refundable tax credit directed to Michigan households who qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, and have children under six. The credit would be worth $5,000 for each child under the age of three and $2,500 for each child between three and six.
A broad and growing coalition of leaders from the state’s non-profit, business, and religious communities have signed a letter that will be shared with Michigan lawmakers, expressing support for the policy as a way to help non-affluent families pay for basic necessities, including the high cost of childcare; boost labor force participation among parents with young children; and combat the so-called “benefit cliff,” in which public benefits decline as earnings from work increase.
